If doctors tell you that everything is okay and it is safe to conceive, it is time to actually start, not yet. It is time to start preparing for conception. Preparation for conception is important and there are certain steps that both you and your partner should take.


  • Do not take any medicines without consulting with your gynecologist first;
  • Do not smoke (now is a good time to quit);
  • Do not consume alcohol (some studies indicate that small amounts might be okay – but that means no more than 2-3 ounces of wine a day);
  • Do not drink more than two cups of tea or coffee a day (time to switch to herbal teas and fruit and vegetable juices);
  • Do not get sick (or at least, try not to);
  • Do not take excessively hot baths;
  • Start taking folic acid at least three month prior to conception;
  • Be careful dieting (some diets may not be healthy for a pregnant woman or her unborn child – talk to your doctor).
  • Men

  • Try not to get sick (high fever may not be good for conceiving);
  • Do not take excessively hot baths at least three months prior to the planned conception date;
  • Do not smoke, do not drink, and do not do drugs;
  • In an unlikely event that you are a marathon runner or a professional bicyclist – try to lay off excessive exercise for some time prior to conception;
  • Do not wear tight, synthetic underwear.
